Meaning Centred approach

The main idea behind Meaning-Centred framework is that “lack of meaning is the chief source of stress as well as anxiety and can lead into emptiness, hopelessness and despair.
In other words, Meaning-Centred therapy is a type of psychotherapy that believes that lack of meaning causes mental health issues, so it attempts to help people find meaning in their life and experiences.

Meaning-Centred framework promote the idea that humans are motivated by a “will to meaning” as opposed to the “will to pleasure” and “will to power“.

This form of psychotherapy partially grew out of Dr.Viktor Emil Frankl’s frustration with these other schools of thought. Specifically, Frankl felt that psychoanalysis was too reductionist, in that it abandoned genuine and spontaneous human encounters for methodological reasons.

How does it work?

Various cognitive therapeutic techniques and approaches are introduced to promote personal meaning. Existential probing is used to discover the meaning and purpose of events and actions. Contextualizing is employed to place the problem in a larger context. These two assessment tools are aimed at discovering the deeper meaning of presenting problems and the client’s ultimate concerns. Magical thinking is used to explore new possibilities for life change. Personal Meaning Profile and effective coping strategies are used to equip and empower the client to cope with life’s demands and pursue meaningful life goals.
The counsellor works closely with the client, not as a passive listener, but as a coach who provides the expertise and social validation needed for success in the client’s quest for a meaningful existence.
